Hi, thank you for the question. You can buy the cartridges separately, or as a set. (The printer comes with your first set). This printer uses 206 toner cartridges, that have the drum attached. Every time you replace the toner, you get a new drum which keeps the quality in pristine condition. Non-genuine HP toner may work once, may notwork at all, or may work fine, however, we do not recommend it. Non-genuine cartridges may alter the print quality and will shorten the life of your printer.
