• It actually requires 4 toner cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). I'm not sure if it will actually be able to print if you do not physically have the 3 color ones installed, but you can certainly configure it to print in just grayscale or monochrome (pure b/w)... An initial set of the 4 toner cartridges is included in the retail package and they come pre-installed inside the printer..

• This unit requires four toner cartridges, Black, Cyan, Yellow and Magenta. Haven't tried to remove the color cartridges to print only in black.
