“Can I opreate this with only a black cartridge, or do all 4 cartridges need to be installed?”

• you need all the cartridges loaded for the printer to work.

• I believe they all must be installed but if you do not want to print in color just change the settings in your computer, to do this just hit the print button when you want to print something then look closely at the options and select Gray Scale. you should not have to change that again until you want to print in color.
