“Using other computers with printer The printer is connected to my main computer with USB. I have two other computers. One has XP on it and the other is a laptop with Windows 8.1. How can I use the printer with these computers. I tried on the one with XP. Went into "printers" Add printer. Typed in the URL but the computer said that it could not do it because the printer was offline but it is not. The URL I typed came from the settings of the printer starting off with http://192. . I didn't install the software on this computer. Could this be causing the problem? Any help will be appreciated.”

I see this is over two months old, but since previous answers are so poor and this is such a common question (ITtech here) here you go: ... you said "The printer is connected to my main computer with USB." so most likely you are also near your router/ISPbox and you have a network/ethernet cable going from it to you computer so it can be on your local network (which of course has access to the internet.) Do Not use the USB cable - this is actually limiting your access to many of the features this printer offers - especially when printing from tablets/smartphones. Using the USB cable forces the computer to use an HP USB driver that can/will compete with the HP Wi-Fi driver. The only time this issue will not be present is when the "main computer" is off.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Perhaps I can only answer a part of your question. Read elsewhere that USB connection somehow interferes with WIFI. We have more than one computer printing to this printer via WIFI. Each computer must have the software loaded for the printer to work. (One of our computers was able to find the computer via WIFI, but without the software, no matter how many times we clicked on "print", nothing printed.)

That's a workaround, however. You'll have to install the software on each computer and that should work for you.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Different operating systems require different device drivers. You need different device drivers for each of the different operating systems. Win8.1 comes on the CD or is available online. Not sure if there is an WinXP driver for the device. Check with HP. The other method is to host the printer via one of your computers and share the printer. Then, with the other computer(s), use the shared printer which is attached to the host computer.
