You could spend an hour or two with the HP tech support people on the other side of Earth, or you could just donate that thing to charity and buy a different brand. Sadly, the HP fix will not be useful in the long run.

This happened to me when I first set up the printer for use. It appears that those cartridges that came with the printer are just good for set up, and you will need to purchase new cartridges. Because I had set up the Insta Ink service, HP mailed printer cartridges to me shortly thereafter. I was ready to go which was perfect!
