yes it will print black if a color cartridge is empty i do it all the time on mine

This is needed because the printhead on the printers need a continuous supply of ink otherwise it risks the printhead drying out and becoming permanently damaged. Fortunately HP does make some printers which have the printheads built onto the cartridge. This means that you can remove an ink cartridge that is empty and the printer will continue to print. There are a lot of these models, too many to list here but if you are looking for something similar to the OfficeJet 6500 I would look at the OfficeJet 5255. Also a new change since your last printer is the HP Instant Ink program. Be sure to check that out as well as you will not have to ever worry about buying ink ever again while saving up to 50% on what you would have normally paid for ink.
