If you want a model which will allow you to print without any ink but the black installed you should look at our OfficeJet 5255. It has a two cartridge design which allows you to remove one ink and continue to print. In the OfficeJet Pro 8700 (and any other printer with individual inks like your 8600) you need all inks present. This is because the printhead, which is what puts ink on the paper, is separate from the cartridges. If the printhead does not have a continuous supply of liquid ink it will dry out and the printhead will be permanently damaged. The printers with the two cartridge systems actually have the printhead on the cartridge. This means you can remove an empty ink (like the color) and continue to print with the remaining black ink installed. I would certainly recommend checking out the OfficeJet 5255.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can print in black (grayscale), but some printers won't continue until you've replaced the depleted color cartridges. Here's how to find the answer for sure: go to HP's support site for the 8600, and look up that specific question. BestBuy will most likely not answer these questions, I, like almost everyone else reading and answering these questions, are individuals that have bought the same or similar products. Here's an even better suggestion for the future: being a full-time computer tech for decades, I've heard from so many folks going through the hassle of buying ink, that I suggest getting a color laser printer. They're more expensive up front, but are so much cheaper per page, that it's worth it in the long run. Laser toner is powder, and never dries up like ink, so it lasts longer, and gets so much more pages per cartridge. I realize that the cost of the 3 color cartridges is probably almost what you paid for the printer, and you might want to save the money you'd pay for ink, throw away (recycle, please) the old 8600, and get a nice laser. Of course, color laser printers are more expensive that black, so you might want to decide if you really need color.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It should still print just push , start black.
