I print in black sometimes just to reduce ink usage. When a color cartridge goes empty the printer asks if you want to print in black.

I would think that only black ink is used in gray scale unless the black runs out in that case I don't think the printer will work with some models others will use the other colors to make the black color

You have an option to print only in black (monochrome). When you hit the print button. a rather larger black box will pop-up on screen, allowing you to make adjustments to the printing routine. At the bottom of the pop-up box is the word "more." Click on it and another page will open up, and from there you can select black-only print. Also, on that page, you can select double-sided printing. That is a great feature, since you will only use half as much paper.
