“When my son plays Fortnite the ping is so high. He is convinced it's the PC. We have tried everything that we find listed online to lower ping, such as the PC being hardwired to the modem, got an extender for our home wifi, etc. Anyone have other ideas?”

It is not the fault of the pc. It is caused by the internet. It could be you are connected to a junction box with other people and you are on a splitter off of a splitter. It could be you need new line to your home. It could be you are using a lobby server too far away.
