I don't think you can split two instances of your desktop environment on the monitor. But it is absolutely wide enough to have two different programs side by side. You just drag one program to the right edge of the screen and windows will ask if you want it placed on only that half of the screen. Then you can do the same thing to the left with another program. This actually works for any windows environment on not as wide monitors as well, but this monitor just gives you more real estate to do it with.
