G-Sync monitors were developed directly with Nvidia to work with Nvidia graphics cards and go through an expensive certification process, which leads to higher cost. FreeSync monitors were developed to work with AMD graphics cards, but they are cheaper as they do not have the same expensive certification process. G-Sync Compatible monitors are cheaper because they are actually FreeSync monitors, but they've been tested and approved by Nvidia to work with Nvidia graphics cards (and G-Sync) since a January 2019 driver update. Therefore, G-Sync Compatible monitors should work fine with either AMD or Nvidia graphics cards, and are basically a "best of both worlds" because they are versatile and cheap(er).
