“Some reviews say the gold color plating makes it hard to see the keys to type in different natural lighting throughout the day & if you wear glasses. Is this a big concern & would keeping the backlight on the keyboard help or increase the battery drain?”

Your can't keep the back lit keys on unless you get the most expensive models. That's how HP operates. The back lights shut off after a few seconds on most of their laptops.
