The black ink cartridge will only fit int he black ink cartridge slot. If you want to print a black and white document using black ink only, do one of the following according to your operating system. ◦ On Windows: Open your printer software, click Set Preferences. On the Paper/Quality tab, click Advanced. Select Black Ink Only from the Print in Grayscale drop-down list under Printer Features. ◦ On Mac: From the Print dialog box, choose the Paper Type/Quality pane, click Color Options, and then choose Grayscale from the Color pop-up menu

When you set up your print info, right under the "select a printer" click on "change settings". When that page pops up, click on advanced. You can turn grayscale printing from "off" to "on" there among other choices. If you want to do another grayscale print, you'll need to go back and set it again. It does not hold the setting and I've been caught with color when I've wanted grayscale several times.
