Answers saying it has to be layed flat are incorrect -- it CAN be if you want to do that, but as a "small form factor" machine it's also designed to operate in the "tower" position and the DVD drive works fine that way (just need to be sure the disk is placed correctly so it won't start to fall as the door is closing). In fact, the small vertical "footprint" is a main feature of these kinds of units...
