The extension is indeed made for use with an iPad because it only has one usb C port on the bottom. The main piece of this device has a double usb connection point that lines up with the dual usb C ports of the laptops.

When testing this, if using the provided extension, you will want to run the connection to the second ports for both the hub and the MacBook Pro to ensure functions operate on the hub. This has to do with obtaining a signal for audio/video/data/and power delivery to be supplied to and from the host computer and the hub. Depending on the MacBook used and the year, it may be a different port (or either port).
