“This hyper drive works fine with thumb drives to transfer data, however when I attempt to use it to connect my apple superdrive to read discs, i get a message to connect my superdrive to a USB port for power. I have tried all the possible USB C ports”

so the super drive requires that it be connected to an apple usb-a port so if you are using an apple MacBook with type-c ports you will need an apple usb-c to usb-a dongle and of apples dongles with the type-a ports work with the super drive
