No, it's plug in and use. It fits in the newer type ports and allows you to use the "older" current ones, which will eventually be outdated. So this is like an outlet plug extender/adapter.

You can also plug your computer power cord from the wall into one of the USB-C ports on the adapter and it will pass it through just as if you had plugged directly into the computer.
