“Will this be compatible if I want to close my macbook and still run it on an external display. Normally you need to have the charger plugged directly in because I have found that my current adapter doesn't allow it.”

I would say yes. There are two lightning 3 ports on both sides of the new MacBook. The Hyper-drive plugs into two of the Lightning ports, but doesn’t block them. There are two ports on the Hyper-drive leaving plenty of room for charging wire.
