It depends what you mean, If you're talking about RAM, then no, nothing is actually stored permanently in the RAM, if you're talking about some type of Hard Drive or SSD, which 8 and 16 gb are too small to be either of those, then yes. but i can assume you're talking about RAM, so you should be fine so long as the RAM you're upgrading to is compatible with the motherboard
