“The front panel headphone/mic jack does not seem to recognize it being there. How can I get it to work. The head phones work through the monitor itself, but not the mic. I want the front jack to work.”

You have to click on the volume tab on the task bar, and configure your settings. It should pick up the microphone. I'm using a blue snowball mic it instantly made it my default.
