I would not consider this a rugged unit. You would need a case and some screen covers to protect it. Might be better getting a rugged notebook that folds over to give you more flexibility and more memory. I use lots of maps and this is not the device I would choose just due to memory requirements for mapping. NOTE: if maps are simply a jpeg or pdf then the memory is not as important. If you need to use a mapping program or connect to the internet to use a GIS program .. NO this is not the device for you,
