“The back is open exposing the motor and wiring at the bottom. Is this a defect in my particular fridge? How is it supposed to be kept clean from debris with such an opening, I've never seen a fridge with this?”

This is normal with many fridges. Promotes required circulation around the compressor. When you pull out your fridge to clean the floor, you should also vacuum the space.

I bought online but when I went to store the floor model shows no covering on the motor either. There is no cover for the motor and wiring at the bottom
