These speakers are plugged (in my case) in the rear of my desk top - into a speaker outlet. I don't know why you would want to turn the headset off if you do no have any headset plugged into it. However, by going to the Control Panel in windows OS and selecting the audio/hardware item, it will bring up a screen where you can disable parts of the audio system - such as headset, microphone, speaker. Etc. But, to the bottom line these speakers are excellent for just providing audio - in my opinion.

There is a headphone jack in the front of the speakers for convenience. This is in case your computer or device only has one audio out you can have both headphones and speakers plugged in. A headset is not required.
