This is a known Mac laptop problem. Their USB circuitry doesn't like things that pull more than a few milliwatts on the USB power. This happens with cellphone users on Macs ALL the time. I doubt it is a failure of your enclosure - although it may very well be drawing more power than your average purpose-built external drive. Try using it with a powered USB hub plugged into your Mac instead of the drive directly to the Mac's USB port.
