The pictures are representing the color accurately. In real life, it is a light-colored piece. I assume the "dark" refers to how the wood grain in the veneer looks like it was stained dark and then rubbed off with a cloth. It is a very handsome piece, but certainly not dark-colored.

The picture represents the color correctly. I was worried about the name of the color too, but "dark oak" looks exactly like the photo.
