If you use any of the optional programs with names on the remote, such as relax, comfort, etc then it does change the type of massage within the 20 minutes several times. If you go into manual mode, where you control the location you are able to get the full 20 minutes as kneading.

When the remote starts beeping right after it reclines you when you first hit the power button on the remote, lean forward a bit to allow the rollers to move better. Once they are moving steadily and the beeping stops, you can lean back as much as you want. The kneading function works perfectly whenever I do this. (Previously, I think I was putting too much pressure and it wasn't allowing the rollers to calibrate for the kneading function.) Annoying that it is necessary to lean forward at first, but hey at least my chair is working completely now as long as I make sure to not put too much pressure as it calibrates (or whatever is happening when it is beeping).
