that would depend entirely upon how often you open and close your freezer as well as the temperature and the humidity of the area that you live. Per the manufacturer's instructions you should always wipe down the gasket and the rim around the unit every time it's open as it's so quickly defrost and refreezes. I live in hot humid Florida and after 5 weeks of having my freezer it shows no signs of needing to be defrosted with the unit being opened once or twice daily for a brief time.
