Hello James, thank you for your question. This Insignia Portable Air Conditioner will let you know when it needs to be drained. The unit is designed to stop cooling and display a FL (Full) indicator when the internal water tank reaches capacity. At that point, you can drain the water using the drain port on the back of the unit. Under normal operation, most of the moisture is evaporated automatically, so manual draining is only needed occasionally typically in very humid conditions. Sudeep | Insignia
