You need an over the air antenna to pick up major networks etc. at no cost. You need cable to watch paid programming. This tv is in essence a giant firestick with it's own screen. Adding an external stick doesn't help you in any way. You would just be duplicating what you have. All programming is via an app. Keep in mind and do your research and you can find anything you want to watch at no cost on an app. Hope this helped
