For future reference, Best Buy has a feature that allows you to compare items. I did that in this case and it says that the 3D has 21 pre-set programs and the 2D has 6. Both are zero-gravity. 2D is smaller and it does not require assembly while the 3D does require some assembly. The 3D has a manual mode on the armrest. In order to make your own massage with the 2D you need to use the remote. We are very, very happy with our 3D, by the way.

By the way 4D says it adds that the rollers spin. So it is not just the number of persets, the 3D adds another axis of movement.

The quick answer is that it really does mean what it says, ie. 2D can move in 2 dimensions (or directions, basically) - 3D can move in 3 dimensions which allows the massage head to do a much more thorough, realistic, and frankly, satisfying job. Further, the latest tech is 4D, and as you may guess, yes, it can move in 4 directions. This can provide an amazing massage that most closely mimics having an actual expert in each of the provided techniques personally doing your massage. Of course 4D costs more, so... decisions,,, decisions. Good shopping, and I hope something amazing happens for you today.
