The hole is for draining when you manually defrost the unit.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The diamond shaped hoop cord is placed to keep objects from flowing out of the fridge and plugging that drainage hole. Keep it in place, loosely. Then, as the fridge defrosts and water trickles down the back wall, it will be directed into that hole for discharge from the interior of the fridge, and evaporation on the exterior tray. I would not remove the hoop cord risking getting plugged by an errant piece of food resulting in water accumulation in fridge during defrost cycles.
