“If the power cord is 8 ft. and the distance from the location of the device to the power cord is less than that, is it safe to bend the extra wire a few times and secure it with a rubber band? Or do you just let the wire sit on a possibly damp carpet?”

Because the cord is 8 feet long, I secure the cord along the wall floor trim using products that hides the cords so not to be exposed or to avoid tripping over them.
