There is a timer that you can set. You are able to set the timer anywhere from 0 to 3 hours, all in 10 minute increments. Once the timer reaches zero the cooker will shut off.

Also, If you try to use this without cookware on the cooking surface it will not heat up and an alarm will sound. If cookware is not placed on the cooking surface within 10 seconds, it will return to standby mode. If the cookware is removed, a buzzer sounds and it will go into standby within 10 seconds if cookware is not placed back onto the unit.

if you have a pan on it, it will maintain whatever temp you adjusted it to; if there is no pan on it; it will shut off in 10 seconds. it has an alarm; and I believe you can set a desired amount of cooking time

No, I have a timer I use close by. I really am pleased with mine. Can cook whole meals in it and it is very roomy.
