Please go on the Internet and enter the website for Insignia Products by using the URL address Insigniaproducts.com and enter the Insignia "model" number of this TV (i.e.,NS-40D420NA18) and then click onto "supports & downloads" and then click onto the "user guide" selection. Within the text, one can see that there are two (2) sources for audio "outputs"--optical digital audio output "and" 3.5mm analog output. The optical digital audio output, they say, is the best choice to get the maximum performance out of a soundbar; however, a soundbar "can be" connected to the TV with a male<>male 3.5mm connection as well. I, personally, reserve my 3.5mm analog output on the TV for my headphone connection. There are not many TV manufacturers out there these days who offer the option to connect headphones to the TV like Insignia does! When using the optical digital audio output to connect a soundbar be sure to set the TV audio setting to PCM. Also, I have a 3.5mm male to female "extension" cable which has about two (2) feet in length and I keep that "permanently" connected to the back of this television set. This way, I do not have to move the TV or reach around the TV with the risk of doing damage each time that I want to connect, say, a set of headphones or some other device which needs an audio "out" jack. If you use the TV's remote control and go into the "AUDIO" part of the TV's menu and then scroll down to "speakers" and click "okay" on the remote control you will then have the option of selecting AUTO, ON, or OFF. With the AUTO setting highlighted, any time anything is plugged into the 3.5mm female audio out jack ("even" just an extension cable!), sound will "NOT" come out of the TV's speakers. If you select "ON;" however, even if something is plugged into that 3.5mm female audio out port, you will be able to hear sound emanating from the TV's speakers and you can also adjust the TV's volume. Please open the photos I have provided below which I hope will help you and other Best Buy customers better understand the process. In addition, I went on the Insigniaproducts.com website and I entered this TV's model number (i.e., NS-40D420NA18) and then I click onto "Supports & Downloads" and then I selected the language choice for my user's guide. You will find that on page fourteen (14) of that Online user's manual is listed the model "jacks" for the 40"/49" models of this Insignia TV. I hope that this information helps you and other Best Buy customers Anonymous!-
