“Is there a way assign a different function to the four buttons at bottom of the remote?. Any example would be the DirectTv button changed to function like the missing input button on the remote?. I'm finding the remote difficult to use.”

Unfortunately, these buttons at the bottom are purchased by the companies they are for. IE, DirecTV paid insignia to make x number of TVs, say 1000, with a DirecTV button, and because they paid for it, they really dont want you reprogramming it. For this reason, theyre not programable, and its quite unlikely that they ever will be.
