“So are you saying that when I use the jacks on the bottom of the TV for my surround amp the tv speakers will/should shut off? Also the HDMI's are inputs only correct-they don't flow both ways do they?”

Hi Kenny. Thank you for leaving us this question trusting that we will answer you accurately. The HDMI ports on the back of the TV are INPUTS only, correct. They do NOT output signal. If you use the 3.5 mm headphones jack to output sound it will shut the speakers OFF. The only way to get external speakers and the TV's speakers at the same time would be Optical Toslink Cable.
