I haven't tried to put big ice bags in the freezer, but I'm pretty sure you could get 4-5 ice bags in the freezer if it were completely empty. I put 20lbs of ground beef in the freezer and I could put another 100lbs in no problem. 5 cubic feet seems small, but it will actually hold quite a bit. The problem that could arise is keeping all of that frozen and then retrieving the items on the bottom should you need that first.
