You just empty and turn off as needed to defrost. Being out east you have higher humidity and during the summer will likely get frost. Packing a cooler tightly with frozen food while it thaws is easy. Frost free models actually raise the temp several times over 24 hours to thaw any frost, this contributes to freezer burn and quality issues. If you use this as back up storage you don't open as much causing frost, mines in the garage.

The frequency that defrosting will be necessary cannot be determined as there are too many variables. The freezer needs to be defrosted once ice has built up to 3-5mm inside of the unit.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have only had the freezer for two months. No significant build up of ice yet. The owners manual states that you remove the frozen food and unplug the freezer, open the door and let the ice melt. Wipe out the freezer and plug back in. There is no drain so you will have to wipe out the water from the ice melting.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Manual defrost, best to be done when freezer is just about empty. Usually needs to be done when there is ice accumulated on the freezing elements and you notice performance failing. Turn off power, open door, let defrost. I usually put a towel down in case there is excess ice/water.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Maybe twice a year, make sure freezer is empty, unplug and wait about 2 hours, with door open, than clean it out.
