• Yes..I have done this to my Samsung 8000 series..the sound quality is good...however, on your smart tv, go inside sound settings and pick the best setting.. I went with pcm or something similar verses hearing though HDMI and bit stream

• If your cable box supports digital optical out and your TV can decode digital optical in then yes the ends are industry standard so it should work

• Yes you can run this optical cable between your cable box and your smart tv. The sound should be better when you do that.
