“The instructions say to turn it on for 15 minutes at the highest temperature to remove any manufacturing residue that may remain after shipping. I did this and while it was heating up there was a metallic smell. Did anyone notice this?”

This is normal, the smell comes from a layer of oil on both the metal plate and the heating tube which evaporates when heated. The smell will disappear.
