I think either will work well. 3" is plenty of room. If you haven't already you'll want to here: www.antennaweb.org to see the direction that you'll want the antenaa to face. Use the iPhone compass app to understand which direction is 55 degrees, etc. If your still in the room with the window and the 3" of clearance I'd tape it temporarily on the wall and again on the window and see if there's any difference in the number of channels and the quality of reception. My guess is you won't be able to tell the difference.

Also, you can install the antenna on the wall. • Keep the antenna away from sources of interference such as air conditioners, hair dryers, and microwave ovens. • Run a channel scan (from your TV's setup menu) every time you move your antenna. • If possible, position your antenna toward the transmission tower. To determine which channels are available in your area, visit www.antennaweb.org. Type in your zip code to get help with antenna placement. • Test the antenna in multiple locations to find the strongest signal. • Run a channel scan monthly to make sure that you are receiving all possible channels.
