Thank you for your inquiry! The Insignia™ Bumper Case with Apple Pencil Slot is designed to store the Apple Pencil securely on the back of the case. However, to charge the Apple Pencil, you will need to remove it from the storage slot and attach it to the side of the iPad. The Apple Pencil charges magnetically when connected to the side of the iPad, so it cannot charge while stored on the back of the case. Keith | Insignia Support
