“How do you turn off the machine and have the red light turn off?”

I think that light is an indication that the item has power, and the only way to turn it off is to remove all batteries and unplug, which will cause a loss of any stored settings. (Haven't tried it - with the regular power outages, I've just left it sitting. I don't know if being plugged in bypasses battery usage - I'm hoping)...
