We plugged in the Insignia boombox and all we get is a little red light. Is there a trick for getting this thing to work? null

Once plugged in, look at the second row, go to the last button (ON/Standby button) and press it. It would normally turn the boombox on.
Then make sure what you want to use as SOURCE by pressing the SOURCE button next to the last one on the second row.
If for any reason nothing works after more trials, then bring it to a an electronics store (Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc...) and ask a technician there for assistance to check it for you.

Underneath the display panel are two rows of buttons. 
On the lower row, push the button on the right end. 
Adjust the volume control wheel on the side of the device to adjust volume.

Sure. The row of "buttons" below (second row) are for operating the FM radio. Except for the one farthest to the right. Push this, then wait a few seconds. Do not expect it to be instantaneous! A blue light will fill the screen, followed by a numerical indicator showing how many selections are on the disc, wait a bit more while this is loading, then the first selection will begin. The top central button will allow you to skip to whatever selection you wish to play. Or just leave everything alone and the CD will play.
(I had a bit of a problem figuring this out initially, too.)
