• A1. Yes, this is a stand alone unit. A2. Antenna amplifier - It works when it is connected to a standard HD Antenna. However, you might need an Antenna amplifier if your location is not close to TV transmitters. You can check by visiting this site: antennaweb.org

• If the signal level is high enough from the antenna, it will work by itself. You do need an antenna.

• Well, if you have an "old big back" tv, you would need this and an amplified antenna. Now if you have a flat screen tv, you just need an amplified antenna for best channel performance. :-D Hope this helps! I would definitely recommend the Mohu Leaf 50.
