Can you charge the batteries without using the controller? Can you charge the batteries independent of the controller? For instance if I buy a few more back up batteries can they charge on the stand by themselves?

I actually believe you can.
The way the charger works is by a pressure sensor. If you can find a way to make the charger packs stay on the pressure trigger, I'm pretty sure that the packs will still charge.

Not in the standing charger. They do sell a smaller charger for the battery packs though.

No. The charging ports are set up high in the docks for a controller to be mounted on them. There is no way to charge the battery without hr controller, unless you maybe tape the battery to the docking station.
