“Has anyone experienced unusable audio conversion with this device? I have one such device plugged into the HDMI output of a cable converter, and it produces perfectly usable analog video, but the audio is nothing but unusable static.”

For the benefit of those who might have this problem, it was not a cabling issue. The device to which this coverter had been connected was configured for Dolby Digital audio out through HDMI. Obviously, there is no Dolby Digital decoder in this device; consequently, changing the other device's output to plain, two-channel stereo solved this problem..
