For the benefit of those who might have this problem, it was not a cabling issue. The device to which this coverter had been connected was configured for Dolby Digital audio out through HDMI. Obviously, there is no Dolby Digital decoder in this device; consequently, changing the other device's output to plain, two-channel stereo solved this problem..
