“Drive comes up as protected and will not let me use the drive. What would cause this behavior?”

• One of the most likely causes for the drive to show as "protected" and not be accessible, is due to the Windows encryption having been applied to the drive. You will have to obtain the 32-character encryption key from your Microsoft account. You can get the information for this from the Microsoft support page. Just search for BitLocker recovery key.

• You have to enter drive management in Settings and initialize any new drive. do a windows search for initializing a new drive and you will find detailed instructions.
