I bought this for similar reasons as you and as far as my experience with it, id say yes it will work.

Just not with native os install software

hardware wise, yes this works just fine, but you will need to have a downloaded software in your computer to copy it over, I recommend using Macrium Reflect, it just takes a few hours to copy everything over

You should be able to use it for that purpose without a problem. Samsung has proprietary software that makes cloning the drive very easy

Yes, that is exactly what I used mine for.  It worked perfectly.
