You cannot use this item to get audio directly to headphones, there is no headphone jack. It takes a digital audio signal from a source ( TV, cable or SAT converter box, etc.) and converts it to an analog signal ( RCA jacks, red and white, left and right) to input into a receiver/amplifier that has no digital audio input jacks (RCA analog only). I have an older amplifier that I will not get rid of because it's so good but it came out just before digital audio was the norm so all I have are analog RCA input jacks. Headphones will only connect to amplifiers typically unless you have a source ( TV, cable or SAT box, Blu-Ray, DVD) that may have headphone jack. If your TV has no audio out, this device will not get you what you need.
